Karakiani (Kanakia)

Kanakia (or Karakiani) is a settlement in Salamina, in the Islands Regional Unit of the Attica Region. According to the 2011 census, Kanakia has 206 inhabitants. It is built on the south-west coast of the island, at an altitude of 10. It is located in the middle of the island of the same name bay, at the entrance of which is an islet known as Kanakia. Historical data In Kanakia, after excavations started in 2000 by the University of Epirus, an acropolis with a palace complex from the Mycenaean times and parts of a settlement from the same period were discovered. It has been identified with the Mycenaean capital of the island. The main building of the settlement is a double mansion with 33 rooms on four levels. Among the finds were a copper talent from Cyprus and a plate of scaly armor bearing the Egyptian royal delta of Ramses II. Kanakia is mentioned for the first time in the censuses of 1971, when it was annexed to the community of Aiantei. Until 2001 they were known as Karakiani. This point of interest is coastal and urban. Suitable Visiting Season: All year round. It is not accessible by public transport. There is no cost or ticket. Visiting hours: Free.
